Audioslave- Revelations

Hi i've been listening to the album Revelations recently, after being released in 2006. I have also been listening to songs from scream, and even that new song featuring him, called Lies.
I personally didn't like his take on the vocals, as much as i usually do, i though they were a bit too rough, and lacked the power that he normally has, and that he has now.
I think that if he re recorded the vocals for that particular album, i would like it so much more, and in some ways i would be very interested in hearing it as for songs like, Moth, and Shape of THings to Come, they are great songs, but his vocals are so much better, and smooth, powerful than are displayed on tracks from revelations.
How do others feel about that.
ALready like the vocals as they are?
No point revisiting old music?

just interested
I would be really interested and pleased if one day he spent time, re recording the vocals, so that we could hear his awsome voice as it is now, which is brilliant.
I just though that the singing on revelations lacked that energy that was on the first audioslate album and DOTU from Soundgarden.

Re: Audioslave- Revelations

Interesting, I actually, liked revelations, more than, the other albums, vocally.

Just messin' with you about the commas.

Seriously though, I did like his vocals a lot more on revelations than on most of his other albums (soundgarden, audioslave, temple of the dog, solo, etc).

What about his vocals on revelations didn't you like?

Re: Audioslave- Revelations

Revelations is my favorite of the AS albums, by far. Although I can't explain in a musically-technical manner. For me, it was the most Cornell-ish of all three.

Re: Audioslave- Revelations

I suppose its just that in that album his vocals are quite rough, in my opinion. But then other people like that style so i understand other peoples point of view. I still really like the album, but just like his vocals in the first audioslave album more.

I take the point about the commas. Just read it through. Almost unreadable. Anyway I'll try more full stops. Ha ha

Re: Audioslave- Revelations

I love Chris's vocals in Revelations just the way they are ... a bit raspy and deep. Love that! Suits the mood of the music really well. It's a great album and I just wish that they would have toured it a bit before the split.

Re: Audioslave- Revelations

Speaking of rough vocals, I think Out of Exile has his most unpolished yet. In some songs to me it actually sounds painful (for example, Heaven's Dead). I get the feeling that he didn't spend half the time doing takes as he did for the self-titled. In Revelations to me his voice sounds a lot smoother again, though it's still a little rough around the edges.

Re: Audioslave- Revelations

I think Audioslaves first is head & shoulders better then the other Audioslave albums. It is the deepest and showcases his strong vocals better then the others.

Cochise, Show Me How to Live, Gasoline, What You Are, Set It Off, Shadow of the Sun then throw in Like A Stone, I Am the Highway, and Last Remaining Light for some balance (not to impune the other songs on the album by omitting them)

I would love to hear their first album played live cover to cover.

I agree. I think the first album is outstanding!! So many great songs all on the same album.

I have wanted to hear (in concert) The Last Remaining Light for the last three years, but he doesn't ever seem to do it :(

Re: Audioslave- Revelations

@ThomasRueb - I agree on the OOE, tho' I do have soft spot in my heart for Heaven's Dead. I think Cornell was in the long process of readjusting after giving up smoking after, like, 20 years. The smoke does affect a singer's voice, one way or another. I think he even spoke of it in interviews, like for a while he couldn't be sure from day to day how his voice might sound.

I think at this point in time his voice, and lungs, have (fortunately for us all) sprung back.

But I don't this he was feeling so great during the Cuba trip but he persevered anyway.

Re: Audioslave- Revelations

Most hardcore SG fans say that the self titled is the best album. I personally think it is the closest to SG music, like songs Chris had in his repertoire for SG before it disbanded. But it was given a different flair due to the musical stylings of Tom and Co.

I love all 3 albums, but Revelations is the band coming together and developing their own unique/funky sound.

Yes, and that's also what makes it so sad that they disbanded. For whatever reasons - only THEY know the truth, eh?

Re: Audioslave- Revelations

Yup, Revelations is the best Audioslave record. It's the least like a Rage/SG Frankenstein monster, and verges on being a pretty rockin' funk album (probably why you like it most seafud, as you have a Fishbone avatar.) I would like the self-titled more if it were a bit more structured and reigned in. By contrast, Revelations is a little too short. Audioslave never escaped their predictable verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-verse-chorus song structures, which is why I'll always prefer late-era Soundgarden. But I think Revelations is really the closest they came to being something great.

I bet if you got close to him during one of his solo shows with a sign saying Last Remaining Light, I bet he would do it..He did Get Away Car in one show and I am quite sure that was not on the original setlist. He did Exploder at a few shows and I bet that was by request too.

It would be great during the acoustic set as well

Well stated, but I like the fusion of SG/RATM better then true Audioslave then..

Cornells powerful voice with the unique guitar sound of Tom Morello..(tough combo)
Chris' voice may have been technically better in the last two Audioslave albums, but his style is much more pronounced in the first album

I think their self titled album is one of the best rock albums ever. I would not dare make that statement with OOE or Revelations even though I like songs on both of those albums.

I will admit i am critical of music, and there are not too many albums ever which I can truly listen to cover to cover like I can with Audioslaves first.

Been there, done that!! Plus, tweets the day of the concert...

I know he is very open to requests, but I have heard him say "not gonna happen" to others. He usually takes requests during his acoustic part of his concerts. He did play Thank You when we requested it. He was going to do Can't Change Me which requires a special accessory to his guitar (sorry, I'm a music fan, not a musician so I have no idea what it's called). He changed his mind and took it off to play Thank You.

I'm sure there's a reason why he doesn't do it. Maybe it's a tuning issue. Maybe it's a voice thing. I have heard him say in interviews, he conditions for months before he will do Slaves and Bulldozers live.

During the Carry On tour, he did Slaves & Bull Dozers almost every show as part of the encore. Maybe the Last Remaining Light now brings bad memories to him..

I would like to hear it live too

Re: Audioslave- Revelations

He did Last Remaining Light during some of the very early Audioslave concerts in Europe, in 2003. It's one of my favourites too, but I have to say it didn't work terribly well live. Tended to drag - I don't think the rest of Audioslave were very used to playing ballads at that stage.

Revelations is an incredible album. I love Audioslave and I'm STILL disappointed they didn't tour behind that album. They broke up without ever doing most of those songs live. Someday, they are going to have to make it up to me.

And dude, Cornell sounds fucking awesome on Revelations. He sounds awesome on everything. Stop being so fucking picky.

Fair enough. I would have liked the first Audioslave album much more if not for the terrible (imho) production quality. For me, that album is almost unlistenable (but Cornell's voice was great).

I was apprehensive about revelations after Out of Exile came out. His voice had most noticeably changed on OOE and I was worried that Revelations would show further change in a negative way. However, as more promo stuff leaked (Cornell acoustic shows) I became more excited. I believe it's the blues lover in me. I love the more raspy voice. To me it adds more color. My favorite moments from Euphoria Morning were his bluesy/raspy voice (Steel Rain especially).

But, like you said, everyone has different taste. Example: I love Johny Cash...my fiance...not so much! hehe. She respects him, but really can't listen to him. It's literally painful for her to listen to him. She, however, can listen to Nirvana...EXTREMELY painful for me to listen to. Again, the respect is there, but it's just not my thing.

Side note: I was disappointed in Carry On for one reason. WHY did his voice sound 200% better in his live performances surrounding the album release? I liked the production quality, but his live performances were head and shoulders above his studio takes.

Ugh, I'm so glad the he's doing whatever he wants to do. However, I would love to hear some sort of bluesy/stripped down acoustic album from him...entirely self-produced. DOTU was the best Soundgarden album in my opinion. To hear Chris on his own, completely self-produced would be extremely appealing to me. However, I only want to hear it from him if it's him bleeding his heart out.

In the mean time, Myles Kennedy is coming out with a solo cd that looks to hold me over quite well. Slash too (Can't wait to see those two on tour some time this year)

But, to me, Cornell most "bled his heart out" with TOTD.

Yeah, I go back and forth between TOTD and EM.

I'm hoping for the best (that Gabin song is good sign, as far as I'm concerned).
