Re: Promise - Slash/CC

I've wondered the same thing... where was it written that it is Chris' lyrics? I've heard that Slash wrote it for his kids, also. But, I originally thought it was Chris' lyrics...?

Slash says: "“Chris was great. Promise was probably the most unorthodox piece of music that I’d written, it was very different. It was one of those things, I don’t know why I thought of him for that song more than any of the others, but I sent it to him and within 48 hours he sent me this great lyric and we were off and running. it was as simple as that. Everybody seems to like this one.”

Chris says: "It's a song that you would write to either a young friend or one of your children, giving them advice of "don't let the world get you down because it's going to try." It's the nature of youth to have a rosy outlook and feel like you're going to be able to charge through life with a machete and make your own way. But the reality is that a lot of unexpected things are going to crash on you, and the song deals with that."

Re: Promise - Slash/CC

I only recently bought the cd because I was going on a long road trip and could devote my time to it. The jacket says Slash and each of his artists co-wrote their songs.

I really like this cd, as rock cd's go, and it seems each of the songs reflect the person he chose to collaborate with.
I know most of you mentioned before the Fergie song was one of your favorites. But it is one of my least favorites and not because she doesn't have a stunning rock voice-I was impressed. However, it most reminded me of a GNR song, and it was the least imaginative on the cd in that respect, imo.

Re: Promise - Slash/CC

Thanks Clare--I was still wondering that, too, since I read about Slash writing it for his kids. They seemed so very much like Cornell lyrics.

I used this song to make a video montage of Chris with his kids, which I sent to them on Father's Day. Don't know if he really saw it, but Toni (M-I-L) said they got lots of smiles from it.

I can't get the link to cut and paste, but my channel on YouTube is NDietrich66 and my only other video is of the gulf spill, done to Slash and Myles Kennedy's "Starlight." After that one, I HAD to make an upbeat one! CornellandChrildren is the name of the video.

Check it out, if any of you missed my multiple posts on FB and Twitter, LOL.

Where was it reported that Slash wrote the lyrics, Nancy?

Re: Promise - Slash/CC

It was more "implied" in that article from Classic Music magazine. I was perhaps too distracted by the numerous photos to read it correctly. Do you still have the link to that article? I thought it came from you--I could be mistaken... Maybe Nina posted it...

Must investigate.

Re: Promise - Slash/CC

Links above mention the writing of the song - also here's a new interview with Slash which further clarifies -

http://tonight.co.za/index.php?fArticleId=5527448&fSectionId=431&fSetId=251

"...."I had known Chris Cornell for years but I didn't know him like that. His song is about his daughter, which is really sweet. In terms of recording he knows what he wants and it's not that hard for him to get it. It's in his delivery." Slash explained that he'd write a song and then think of the most appropriate person to sing on the track. They, in turn, would come up with the lyrics and vocal melody."

Re: Promise - Slash/CC

I love the lyrics. The song came at at time when my oldest son was going through a rough time and I sent him the link and told him to listen to the lyrics. I think it made him feel better. The beginning of the song reminds me of when my kids were born. I can relate to the song how you want to protect your kids from the world, yet sometimes you can't. All you can do is teach them how to deal with it in a positive way.
