Beginning in Nice, Cornell is set to play a dozen arena dates in France as special guest of Lenny Kravitz.  Later he'll appear at a string of major music festivals and headline shows across the continent.

In June, he’ll play a major solo show in Israel at Tel Aviv’s New Exhibition Centre before heading to eastern Europe for appearances in Poland and the Czech Republic. The July date will include an show at Rome’s historic Roman Theatre at Ostia Antica.

The summer shows will combine music from “Scream” with songs from throughout Chris Cornell’s 14-album career, which has constantly redefined his sound and vision to encompass new music, new collaborations and new activities.

September 23, 2008 — Santa Monica, CA — Chris Cornell, best known as the acclaimed lead singer and songwriter for Soundgarden and Audioslave, has co-written the new single from American Idol winner David Cook, entitled “Light On.” The track, which is being released to radio this week, is the lead-off single from Cook’s upcoming solo debut. Cook scored big on American Idol the week he performed Cornell’s bluesy reinvention of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” which appears on Cornell’s 2007 solo album Carry On.

“Chris Cornell is a great musical mind,” commented Cook. “It is an honor to work with him in any capacity on what hopefully will be a huge hit for the both of us.”

I am on a plane from Cape Town to Johannesburg, then back home to Paris. Just played South Africa for the first time ever and as I leave I again feel very lucky to be able to do what I do as my life’s work.

The country is beautiful. The weather, the water, the mountains, but as usual, for me what really matters is the people. The fans and the South Africans that we met have all been amazingly warm and friendly. Getting this kind of reception so far away from home always moves me. This has been another on a long list of firsts for me in the last year.

As a solo artist I can finally move unencumbered; making my world as big as possible and playing music for as many people around the world who will show up to listen.

I have been working on a lot of new stuff that I will tell you about later.

Former Soundgarden front man Chris Cornell spoke to Stuff magazine about leaving Audioslave, his most recent band.

“They were just different from me. They wanted to have the A&R guy come down to the studio; they wanted the producer to tell them what he thought of the music. That just wasn’t my thing,”

He also told Stuff about the difference in being a front man versus being a solo performer.

“Some bands are formed around an egocentric, control-freak singer, and others are more democratic. I mean, if you are playing as a Smashing Pumpkin, is that much different from playing in Billy Corgan’s band? One thing I can say is that when you are playing solo, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to, musically.”

Chris Cornell will be honored with the Stevie Ray Vaughan Award at the third annual MusiCares MAP Fund benefit concert Friday at the Music Box@ Fonda in Hollywood for his support in helping addicts with the recovery process. The fund provides members of the music community with access to addiction-recovery treatment regardless of financial situation.

“I think MusiCares, in the big picture, is a great idea to begin with and something that I’m surprised somebody didn’t think about earlier,” Cornell says. “I still want to figure out ways to be more aware and do more for these people. One of the original problems that came up was how do those people know that they have access to something like MusiCares? Doing the honoree ceremonies is part of that.”

After devoting the bulk of the past 20 years to bands, the former Soundgarden and Audioslave vocalist is comfortable back on his own with a new solo album, “Carry On,” due June 5 via Suretone/Interscope.

“I really prefer, if I’m in a band, to focus on the music of that band,” Cornell says. “But invariably what happens is I’ll start writing songs that just don’t work or fit.”

He’s reveling in the artistic freedom being a solo artist provides and, having released four records in the past 5 ½ years, Cornell says he’s intent on continuing at that breakneck pace. “Carry On,” which was produced by Steve Lillywhite, was finished quickly after Audioslave dissolved in February.

Cornell's Soundgarden tunes rock the Avalon crowd

Chris Cornell introduced his two-hour concert Wednesday at Avalon Hollywood by telling the audience that he intended to play "old songs, new songs and in-between songs."

He's got a lot of each: For most of the '90s, Cornell served as the frontman of Soundgarden, one of the most successful bands to come out of Seattle's grunge scene.

When that group broke up, Cornell put out "Euphoria Morning," a solo album that traded Soundgarden's thinking-man's metal for psychedelic folk-rock.

In 2001, Cornell joined three-fourths of Rage Against the Machine (after the departure of Rage's singer, Zack de la Rocha) to form Audioslave, which made three CDs before calling it quits this year. And next month, Cornell will release "Carry On," his sophomore solo disc.

Backed by a muscular four-piece band, Cornell did as promised at Avalon. He played a lovely acoustic version of "Can't Change Me," a Beatlesque ballad from "Euphoria Morning." He did "Cochise," Audioslave's homage to Led Zeppelin's misty-mountain funk. He even sang "You Know My Name," the bombastic title-sequence track from last year's James Bond flick, "Casino Royale"; it's one of the few tunes that doesn't make Cornell sound like he's oversinging.

But Cornell's fans came to hear old songs. Perhaps inspired by Rage's reunion last weekend at Coachella, they cheered Soundgarden material as though the band's original lineup were onstage. Despite modern rock's takeover by stylish young emo bands, the vintage stuff sounded surprisingly unweathered: "Spoonman" throbbed with primal energy. "Rusty Cage" drove hard and fast. "Black Hole Sun," Soundgarden's biggest radio hit, induced mass head-nodding. (A few lighters even appeared to show cellphone users what concertgoers used to wave.)

Cornell closed the show with an extended version of Soundgarden's "Slaves & Bulldozers," complete with drum solo. As Cornell stood center stage, allowing the fuzzy guitar roar to pummel his body, he seemed perfectly content to serve up neo-grunge nostalgia.

Reaching into the vault, Cornell finds old voice

During the last Audioslave tour, Chris Cornell's monstrous rock-God voice started showing signs of wear and tear. But that was then. Cornell's sold-out solo show Sunday night at the Theatre of Living Arts proved that the iconic rocker's pipes can still hit ridiculously high notes.

Cornell was as casual as his apparel — T-shirt and jeans. He delivered a set that covered three bands, two solo albums and more than a decade and a half of his career. His howl was in full effect, especially during Soundgarden tracks such as “Outshined” and “Fell on Black Days.”

Such Temple of the Dog tracks as “Say Hello 2 To Heaven” and “Hungerstrike” stoked the primarily 30-something crowd into a frenzy.

Cornell, who has had a remarkably consistent career, had much to choose from during his two-hour set. Fans called for “Jesus Christ Pose,” “Pretty Noose” and his bluesy cover of Michael Jackson's “Billie Jean,” but weren't rewarded. Cornell has been changing his set from town to town. Cornell obviously can't play all of the hits. But the familiar tracks he played — “Black Hole Sun,” “Spoonman” and “Blow Up The Outside World” —impressed.

The rocker turned restaurateur (Cornell has a bistro in Paris), proves he doesn't need more than hired guns. A few new tracks from Cornell's second solo album, an eponymous effort that drops in June, has some bite. “You Know My Name,” which was featured in the film “Casino Royale,” proves that Cornell, 42, has plenty left in the tank.

Give Cornell credit for going solo in the year of the reunion. It would be tempting to regroup Soundgarden and play big venues and make even bigger dollars. Cornell, who crafted the Soundgarden tracks and co-wrote the Audioslave tunes, is fine by his lonesome.

Those who missed Cornell can catch him when he returns later in the year to support his solo album.

Cornell, who put his fledgling solo career on hold in 2001 to front supergroup Audioslave until quitting two months ago, opened hard, loud, and strong with two of his best-known and loved Soundgarden songs: the tribal groover "Spoonman" and the muscular metal of "Outshined."

That pair was followed by the keening "Hunger Strike" from another grunge touchstone, the one-off 1990 Temple of the Dog project that found members of Soundgarden teaming up with future members of Pearl Jam.

While the equally familiar set list that followed may have delivered "Hey dude, remember the ' 90 s" nostalgia for many in the crowd, Cornell himself didn't appear to be dwelling in that twilight so much as joyfully acknowledging it.

When it came to his forthcoming CD, "Carry On," however, Cornell's song choices didn't keep up the evening's mood.

With the exception of the so-so Bond anthem "You Know My Name," they all have elements to recommend them, such as the sweet croon on the plea-for-peace ballad "Safe and Sound," which he dedicated to the families of the Virginia Tech shootings. But alongside loudly loved favorites "Black Hole Sun," "Burden in My Hand," "Like a Stone," and "Cochise," a couple of the album's harder, funkier tracks could have been more memorable. The songs weren't just fighting with collective memory, but with the authoritative brawn Cornell and his backing quartet brought to the rumbling riffs and rhythms, especially on a cage-rattling encore of "Slaves and Bulldozers."

New song or old, with the band or solo acoustic, however, Cornell's justifiably lauded voice was center stage. He may have lost a bit of stamina, but the seductively husky lows of "Doesn't Remind Me" or the skyscraping highs of the waltz-time charmer "Can't Change Me" were a constant reminder that his vocal cords remain some of the best in rock 'n' roll.

Solo, Cornell’s ready to bloom

People aren’t going to forget about semilegendary Seattle-grunge pioneer Chris Cornell anytime soon.

He’s making sure of that.

Having recently parted ways with Audioslave, the former Soundgarden co-founder and vocalist inspired gads of enthusiasm at a sold-out and overstuffed Avalon Thursday night.

The show started late. Cornell, who’s touring with no opener, didn’t turn up until almost 9 p.m. But when he finally got going, he proved his music is still worth celebrating, even if the wimpier material paled next to more aggressive numbers.

The show opened with a pair of Soundgarden tunes: “Spoonman” and “Outshined” both glowed red-hot with Cornell screeching at his powerful best, while Smash Mouth drummer Jason Sutter and bassist Corey McCormick pounded out tribal rhythms behind him.

The Black Sabbath-indebted “No Such Thing,” the first single from Cornell’s forthcoming “Carry On,” due in June, was a triumph. But things turned a corner during Audioslave’s “Like a Stone,” where letting the audience sing felt more like a cop-out than a shared moment of intimacy.

It also became evident that the dual guitar work of Yogi Lonich and Peter Thorn wasn’t enough to fully project Cornell’s music. Shredding away on either side of the singer, the pair sometimes sounded tinny, especially up against the more suitably booming bottom end.

The missteps along the way did manage to detract from what could’ve been a powerhouse performance: Cornell’s acoustic cover of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” brought nothing new to the song (even if the crowd loved it). The anthemic classic rock style of “Doesn’t Remind Me” and the utopian sentiments of the new “Safe and Sound” -which Cornell dedicated to people suffering in the wake of the Virginia Tech massacre - both came across as trite, especially against the dark-side backdrop of his best work.

It could be worse. At least Cornell isn’t one of these terminally tortured souls who refuses to revisit entire periods of his career in order to avoid painful memories. On the contrary. He seems thoroughly in touch with his demons and ready to reckon with them all.

A young Boston College crowd was captivated as former Soundgarden, Audioslave singer Chris Cornell performed to a sold out crowd at Avalon in Boston. As he performed a vast array of hits from extensive career, Cornell managed to take his fans into the future solo career delivering a brilliant performance of four new songs that will appear on his upcoming solo release, Carry On, slated for a June 5th release.

Fans lined Lansdowne Street in the Fenway Park area early to see Cornell. For once, the buzz on the street in Boston was not about the Boston Red Sox, who were out of town in Toronto.

Cornell and his band, which featured Chris on vocals, Yogi Lonich (Wallflowers, Buckherry) on guitar, Peter Thorn on guitar, Jason Sutter on drums, and Corey McCormick on bass, delivered a riveting two hour set of hit songs. The set featured many sing-a-longs, captivating, emotionally brilliant vocals, and timeless, well-crafted lyrics spanning the Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of The Dog era.

Opening with "Spoonman", Cornell's band proved to be tight, and knew how to carefully orchestrate all of the softer, melodic melodies to perfect perfection without overbearing the Cornell’s vocals.

Chris led the audience into a sing-a-long with "Hunger Strike". “Well we have two bars on each side of the stage. By the end of the night, you all will be singing anyway. So why not get started now?" Cornell said, jokingly.

One of my new favorite songs has to be the first single off of Chris's new solo album, ”No Such Thing". This is my new favorite heartbreak song. The melody is very catchy, and I think everyone at some point in their life will identify with the “love gone wrong” lyrics. Chris sang the song with conviction and strength. I was sold at the opening chord.

Cornell said the performance would feature a mixture of old songs and new songs the audience would be hearing for the first time. I find the strategy of playing his solo songs live before the album goes on sale to be interesting. It really gives the band time to develop the songs in a concert setting while building anticipation in fans who will, hopefully, want to go out and buy the new album when it becomes available.

The performance was impressive while presented in a stripped-down mode. The only props used in the performance were the background of lighted stars that sparkled on the black backdrop. Chris's vocals were hauntingly beautiful. As the singer songwriter painted a canvas with his heartfelt melody and lyrics. One of the most moving moments of the set occurred, when Chris took center stage with just his acoustic guitar. Chris and his band performed the moving acoustic song, ”Seasons", and then Chris performed a three song acoustic set. Just to show how all the different genres of music played a major role in tonight's performance, Chris performed the reggae tune, "Redemption Song" in honor of Bob Marley. A fan gave Chris a Bob Marley T-shirt before the acoustic set. The song had a catchy melody, and also payed tribute to the men and women who are fighting for freedom.

Chris also performed another new song entitled, ”Safe and Sound”. He dedicated this song to the fallen heroes of Virginia Tech. Chris said, ”I have always wanted to write this song. When I was young, and playing at a park I witnessed this type of violence."

Another highlight was the song, ”You Know My Name", which was recorded for the latest James Bond movie, ”Casino Royale". It has a catchy feel, and haunting melody.

The hits just kept coming as the band played, ”Doesn’t Remind Me," and ”Rusty Cage."

The audience just wouldn't let Chris go, as he saved the best for last, with one of his most powerful hits, ”Black Hole Sun".

When news broke back in February that Chris Cornell had left Audioslave due to musical differences, many wondered what the future would hold for the talented songwriter. After tonight's performance, there is no doubt in my mind that Chris seemed happier than ever with his career decision. His unique, powerful vocals raged with emotion and passion. As Chris sang with much conviction and proved that tonight in Boston, there was no where else we wanted to be more tonight than onstage singing the songs that emerged out of an era when the songwriting emphasis was put on real life situations and people. The connection between performer and audience was ever so real.

Be sure to check out Chris Cornell on tour this Spring and Cornell’s solo album, Carry On, when it is released on June 5th.

For the first time I can honestly say that not only was the Chris Cornell show a great concert but it literally was a great workout as well. This past Wednesday night I attended the sold out show of Chris Cornell at the Metro, it was far greater than I ever expected.

Given the fact that it was sold out the venue did not seem all that horribly tight or packed with people. Among the crowd waiting in line and the groups I met inside I got the impression that every single one of them considered themselves hardcore Soundgarden/Audioslave/
Chris Cornell fans.

TORONTO - Chris Cornell is proof there is a musical life beyond two successful and respected rock bands -- Soundgarden and Audioslave.

Of course, it helps that the 42-year-old Cornell has so many things going for him:

- He possesses one of the best and most soulful voices in rock and roll -- his wail is legendary

- He has an undeniably charasmatic and sexy stage presence fuelled by his dark good looks

- And he is also a talented songwriter, capable of delivering both thundering hard rock anthems and quieter singer-songwriter tunes.

Cornell's what I like to call The Total Package.

And nowhere was that more evident than during his 85-minute sold-out solo show at The Phoenix Saturday night, ostensibly to promote his second solo album, Carry On, which doesn't come out until June 5.

Certainly, that new disc was represented by such tunes as the first single, No Such Thing, Arms Around Your Love, and his surprising, slowed-down cover of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean, which closed the show.

But it was primarily songs from Cornell's days with Soundgarden --the beloved group that emerged from Seattle's so-called grunge scene of the early '90s along with Nirvana and Pearl Jam --that whipped the crowd into a frenzied clapalong or singalong on more than one occasion.

Opening with Spoonman, Cornell and his tight-sounding four-piece band (including Edmontonian Peter Thorn on guitar), continued the Soundgarden catalogue with such standouts as Fell On Black Days, Outshined, Rusty Cage and Black Hole Sun.

Audioslave, the band that saw Cornell hook up with three Rage Against The Machine members after his first 1999 solo album, Euphoria Morning (represented on Saturday night by Can't Change Me ) was also in the mix with such tunes as Like a Stone.

Cornell announced in Febuary that he was splitting from Audioslave due to personal and musical differences, and truthfully he seems about as happy as he's ever been.

Now a father of two young children with second wife Vicky, and alcohol abuse behind him, he's never seemed more relaxed or comfortable on stage.

There was even a stripped-down section in the middle of the show featuring Cornell's Singles soundtrack song, Seasons, before he took the stage alone, playing acoustic guitar for three tunes including a cover of Bob Marley's Redemption Song.

Cornell also genuinely seemed excited about the response he was getting as a solo act and frequently smiled, pounded is chest or engaged the crowd, asking at one point for the house lights to be brought up so he could get a better look at everyone.

When spotlights instead shone over the audience, Cornell joked: "We're not landing a plane."

Chris Cornell has announced his first UK headline show of 2007 at London's Astoria, May 16th. Tickets are £25 plus any relevant booking fees, and are on sale from 9am Thursday 5th April.
